Question Details: I'm about to go crazy here in lovely Texas. I've been stationed here for two football season now and I can't believe it. Last year when Texas Tech got "lucky" (Harrell threw fantastic pass to a great Crabtree in the closing moments of the game for those that don't remember) and beat Texas... half the state was crying about how lucky Tech got. This year when Nebraska gets an out of bounds kickoff and personal foul, horse collaring, (neither of which Texas can claim any responsibility for) then gets one second put back on the clock to win by one point over a teams ranked 17 notches below them and a two touchdown spread. I HAVE TO LISTEN TO HOW GREAT THE GAME WAS. HOW WONDERFUL COLT PLAYED. HOW FANTASTICALLY BROWN COACHED THE GAME. When I mentioned that they sure go "lucky" Texas fans start looking for a rope and a tall tree. Come on,,,, admit it. Texas got very very lucky last night. 200 yards total offense, 3 interceptions, McCoy sacked 9 times and you still won... LUCKY LUCKY LUCKY. LOL have a great day Texas. Are you hoping for luck against Bama. You may need more than that.
IM are you talking about how Suh's jersey and shoulder pads always seemed to be rearranged after the play? lol it looked really bad on the big screen.
When you are ranked #20th and win .. you should be called lucky. lol
Anthony if you look Texas was ranked #3 when they played A&M. What was A&M ranked (hmmmm 5 and 5 team, lost to OU, OSU both without key players, KSU, Colorado and Arkansas.) Texas should have stomped a mud hole in A&M.. and yet?

Question Details: I'm trying to get into UCSC. I have a 3.66 gpa, a 1710 sat, and with my essay, do you think i have a good chance? thanks!

The last twelve years of my life would be impossible to quantify in a stat sheet and a thousand words or less. It is best described as a concoction of stories and experiences that resemble the characteristics inherent to any great novel. All the fundamentals of classic literature are there: excitement, curiosity, gain, loss, accomplishment, misfortune, victory and defeat. The roots of my development are embedded in my bloodlines, as well as my environment. I am the youngest of four brothers, raised in a setting where my parents encouraged personal individualism. My mom was brought up in a rural and religious Maryland community, and embraced these ideals as someone who grew up in the sixties. My dad was raised in an urban home and represents the blue-collar work ethic his parents instilled in him. My eldest brother attended the University of California at Berkeley and is now an engineer, the next brother is attending the University of California at San Diego with aspirations to become a doctor, and my other brother is attending college in hopes to find a career in music. An integral part of my brothers’ success was their Boy Scout ideology; a path I treaded on when I was the fourth sibling in my family to earn the rank of Eagle. My family background has raised the expectations I have for myself and will set the foundation for the next chapter of my story.
At some point between my rigorous coursework and my zeal for extracurricular activities, I developed a passion for psychology. I work with children routinely in my job at a local recreational facility, have strong connections through Boy Scouts, and cherish the camaraderie I find in team athletics. Many facets of human psychology, including the social interactions of people, human developmental stages, an individual’s mindset, the influence of one’s brain chemistry, and how these factors work in harmony in the science of psychology captivates me. This fascination has stimulated my interest to interact with others; to converse, to debate controversial topics, and to further my understanding of human interaction.
An essential component of my personality is my curiosity. From infancy, I have been known to immerse myself in knowledge toward anything I consider even remotely appealing. I pour myself into books, do thorough research on the Internet, ask for professional advice, and do whatever else it takes to master my fascinations. My interests serve as my motivation to achieve excellence, in topics ranging from reptiles to journalism, from acting to growing peach trees, from any type of sport to playing multiple musical instruments. My curiosities ultimately led me to play three sports in high school, for a combined nine semesters of athletics. I wrestled and ran track, but football was my passion. My coaches noticed my ability early, and I soon earned a starting position on offense as well as defense, and was made a team captain. Unfortunately, I had suffered from a herniated disk and three fractured vertebrae following a violent wrestling match at the end of my sophomore year, effectively ending my football and wrestling careers entirely. I rededicated myself to Boy Scouting, where I found the community participation and companionship extremely rewarding, and attained the rank of Eagle Scout earlier this year. The next focus of my ambition is to further my studies in college, where my passion for working with people can develop into a career that I will find truly satisfying.
Certain professors influence my gravitation to the University of California at Santa Cruz. In her published book, “The Cultural Nature of Human Development”, I thought Barbara Rogoff’s theory on the relation of parental factors in child development, which emphasizes the importance of language and communication, to be very interesting. Her argument proves that linguistics would effectively augment my understanding of psychology. This correspondence of subject matter directs me toward Jorge Hankamer, the highly acclaimed linguistics professor who provides his students with unparalleled interest. Laurence Houseman once said, "A saint is one who makes goodness attractive." Surely, a great teacher accomplishes the same for education.
My academic career and personal development have been a precursor to my current passions – psychology and the complexities of human interaction. Where will these passions take me? My prospective college destination in the subsequent section of my life is unpredictable, but I can’t think of a better institution to write this next chapter than the University of California at Santa Cruz.

Question Details: I'm going to be starting some ballet classes, not to learn to dance, but instead to improve my balance and flexibility and jumps for basketball (this is my coaches idea and he knows the dance instructor). I am going to be starting in a beginners class for teens and up

For the dress code I have to get wear a plain white top, a dance belt & black tights & black ballet slippers. What are the best places to get these and any recommended brands and should I get more than one of anything?

Second question. My instructor is lending me a spare dance belt & said she can give me a pair of girls tights to start with & I can begin the first classes bare foot to begin stretching and some bar work. Will it be obvious if I am wearing girls tights or not? If it is, I'd sooner wait

Final question. My hair is a bit long for a guy but not super long... sort of between collar and shoulder. She said I can wear it in a ponytail but I'd have to pin that back or braid my hair. How do I pin my ponytail back?

Favorite Answer:

Answer by Old Lady
I doubt anyone will know that you will have girl's tights on - and as to buying the belt, tights and slippers, I would try a dance store or ask the teacher where to buy those things.
The hair - I think she means that the hair going back to the pony tail that is not long enough to actually be in the pony tail, is what needs to be pinned back. So, that would only mean pinning the parts of hair that don't reach the pony tail. You have to be able to see the instructor and yourself in the mirrors to know if you are doing things correctly.
Have fun!

Question Details: I think this is a pretty average writing sample of mine. Not my best and not my worst either. It's a character sketch I had to do in my creative writing class. Writing is something I'd like to pursue in some extent in the future. And I'm wondering if you think that in the future, if I keep practicing and getting better, that I could possibly make it in the writing world?

Voices refract their way against the walls, up the stairs, and in between the slightly ajar door.
“Coming,” she yells, but she doesn’t mean now.
Sitting in front of the vanity fixed-up from a garage sale, she adds one more layer of lime green eye-shadow above the smooth black line framing her eyes, to retouch the make-up she did earlier this morning. It matches some of the lines running through the collared shirt she is wearing, and perfectly counters the purple skinny jeans on her thin legs.
“Come on, Jamie, or we’ll leave without you,” says another voice from downstairs.
She pulls her favorite light pink lip-gloss out of the wooden draw that it calls a home. And smoothly pulls the wand out of the shimmering pink, and lightly and evenly applies it to her pink lips.
Jamie walks across the floor covered in clothes and the grid of shoes filling the once empty floor space, she’s careful not to step on anything. She runs the flat iron that had already been on through her already straight hair again in attempt to get the side bangs just right—damn cowlick. After turning it off, she puts it back exactly in its place, on the blue table in front of her jewelry, not turned on a side.
Returning to the row of shoes that lines a portion of her floor, she slips her orange-socked feet into her newer pair of Nikes; they look as if they were made specifically for this outfit: black purple, green, and white. She does a good job at keeping them clean, even her older pair of Nikes look like new still.
She turns off the Motion City Soundtrack she had on, and has been listening to religiously for about a week (it should be changing to something else soon, maybe her sister’s last favorite). She dumps her blue iPod nano and cheetah print covered cell phone into her black coach bag, and ducks down slightly to catch herself one last time in her mirror before walking out her door and guiding it to be perfectly closed as it should be every single time she leaves her room.
Heading down the beige carpet mountain of stairs, Jamie lets more yells slide past her, because now, she really is coming. Her eyes follow her down some of the stairs as she gets one more chance to see her reflection in a mirror. Everything looks the same, but it could have been better, if only she had more time…
“It took you long enough” she hears her mom say, but she just heads to the green-ish SUV sitting in the garage.
She sits shotgun in her mom’s car: the position of music control, if Mom is willing to put up with what she chooses. Going through the Dark Romantics (because Mom no longer liked it, like she seemed to last night), the car settles on Jason Mraz, and she sings along to “Geek in the Pink,” a favorite of hers.
As they pull up into the parking spot, Jamie checks her reflection in the side mirror. Why did the windows have to be open on the drive? She closed hers, but the gusting still rustled her hair. She gets out of the car and straightens her hair back to perfect in the reflection of the tinted back windows.
This will have to do.
The purpose of this assignment was just to develop a character, I'm aware it lacks with a good story line. This is just a sample I'm okay with sharing.
In more of my longer pieces, there is more plot development and it allows description to be spread out more.
The point of this was to be descripitive and create a character.
The girl is a bit of perfection.

Wow! You put so much details in this character and what she does every single second. But if you're going to try to amaze your readers with one page of words, I'm afraid this won't do because it doesn't capture the reader's attention to want to continue reading about Jamie as there is nothing happening to her yet.

But if you're writing for the purpose of developing a character into his/her personality and character then this will do.

Question Details: The 1969 Vikings, 1981 Chargers, 1988 Bengals, 1990 Bills, and 1998 Vikings have all had their stories told as poignant stories of special teams that could have/would have/should have won an SB ring. But who should be in future series?
It seems the series is meant to convey the disappointment of missing a team's only chance (s) to win it all.

Teams that lost a SB before or after winning are obvious exclusions, since there is little reason to feel sorry for them, like the
1966 Chiefs (won in 1969)
1968 Colts (won in 1970)
1970 and 1975 Cowboys (1971 and 1977)
1971 Dolphins (1972 and 1973)
1983 Redskins (1982)
1997 Packers (1996)
2001 Rams (1999)

So as I see it, future choices should be teams that appeared (to themselves, the media and fans) as having a real shot at winning, and for whatever reason came up short.
This would eliminate the following teams whose blowout defeat seemed preordained.

1989 Broncos (55-10)
1985 Patriots (46-10)
1994 Chargers (49-26)
1998 Falcons (34-19)

The Bengals have already had their 1988 story told, which lessens the interest for the 1981 team which lost to San Francisco, since some of the same players got that second chance.

The 1990 Bills have been done, a story which effectively encapsules their increasingly bad performances in the subsequent three SB losses.

More recent SB losers have not had enough time in the collective memory to become sentimental, nostalgic cinderellas stories, if they ever will. This would eliminate

2002 Raiders
2004 Eagles
2006 Bears
2008 Cardinals

This leaves the following choices which I think meet the intended criteria for the show, special teams who had memorable seasons surprising their fans and the NFL, who seemed to have a real shot at a SB victory which would have been the perfect icing on the cake for a team who had turned it around, or at least taken the NFL by storm for that year.

1972 Redskins > George Allen's Over the Hill Gang fit this mold perfectly, electrifying the nation's capital after a quarter century of futility, and one playoff season. They played the Dolphins tough too.

1980 Eagles > Championship starved Philly loved this blue collar team of overachievers, especially after they beat hated Dallas in the NFC Title Game. But their loss had a lot to do with playing poorly against a well-coached Raiders team.

1977 Broncos > Broncomania was unforgettable that season, after 18 years of losing. It wasn't a foregone conclusion they would get beaten so badly, as they played the Cowboys tough in the regular season (14-6).

1984 Dolphins > Dan Marino's first and only SB shot, a remarkable season (14-2) with a record breaking passing attack, the Fins looked like an unstoppable machine coming to Stanford stadium.

Any other suggestions for a "Missing Rings" team episode?

Answer by Midway 56
Missing rings? How about the story of the 2007 New England Patriots, 3 time Super Bowl champ in the decade, perfect season in hand and a lead in the fourth quarter of the Super bowl. A heart breaking loss to the NY Giants who were not supposed to win that game,
